Sue Ross, M.D., J.D.

Sue Ross is a board-certified occupational medicine physician with almost 20 years of experience in a variety of government, academic, healthcare and consulting settings. She earned her MD and JD from the University of Cincinnati. She has authored and co-authored several peer-reviewed manuscripts and made a number of presentations related to diverse topics in the field of occupational and environmental health.  She serves as the Occupational Medicine Advisor to the non-profit organization Toxicology Excellence for Risk Assessment in Cincinnati, Ohio.



Sheila Goertemoeller, PharmD, CSPI, ICPS Bio

Sheila Goertemoeller is a certified specialist in poison information for the Cincinnati Drug and Poison Information Center since 1998.  She is also a licensed pharmacist by the Ohio and New Mexico State Boards of Pharmacy.  She earned a Doctorate in Pharmacy in 2012 from Shenandoah University.  She has authored numerous presentations for the National American Congress of Clinical Toxicology, American Council of Colleges of Pharmacy and Academic Emergency Medicine; and articles for the Journal of Emergency Nursing toxicology corner column.  She is also an Adjunct pharmacology course professor for evening college at the University of Cincinnati.

Amanda Phelka

Amanda Phelka, Toxicologist

Dr. Amanda Phelka is a toxicologist with more than 15 years of experience conducting and evaluating studies assessing chemical exposure and human health risk. Prior to her current role as NSF International’s Director of Toxicology Services, she held the positions of research toxicologist and senior toxicologist at NSF. Dr. Phelka holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in toxicology from the University of Michigan where her research principally addressed the ways by which some nitroaromatic chemicals can negatively impact the nervous system. She has published several peer-reviewed manuscripts, abstracts and book chapters in the fields of toxicology, industrial hygiene and occupational health. Dr. Phelka has served as an invited peer reviewer of U.S. EPA’s draft Provisional Peer Review Toxicity Values (PPRTV) manuscripts and is a member of the Society of Toxicology and the Society for Risk Analysis.


Michael Dourson, Toxicologist

Michael Dourson is the President of the nonprofit organization Toxicology Excellence for Risk Assessment.  He earned a PhD in toxicology from the University of Cincinnati in 1980 and is board-certified.  He also worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), holding several leadership roles.  He has won numerous awards for excellence in risk assessment science and is an author and reviewer of many of the essays found on this website.  He is also a media resource specialist for the Society of Toxicology and a member the EPA’s Science Advisory Board.



Katherine von Stackelberg, Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessor 

Katherine von Stackelberg has over 25 years of experience as a human health and ecological risk assessor, developing integrated, risk-based modeling approaches to support sustainable environmental decision making.   She is a Principal at NEK Associates LTD and also holds a research affiliation at the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis, where she serves as Co-Leader of the Research Translation Core of a Superfund Research Program grant.

Dr. von Stackelberg serves as peer reviewer for numerous journals, and is on the editorial boards of Human and Ecological Risk Assessment and Risk Analysis.  Dr. von Stackelberg serves on the US EPA Board of Scientific Counselors and led the effort to explore the use of decision analytic tools and methods to support environmental decision making within the Office of Research and Development.  She is a member of the Scientific Advisors on Risk Assessment for the European Commission in Brussels.  Dr. von Stackelberg received an A.B. cum laude from Harvard College, and a Sc.M. and Sc.D. from the Harvard School of Public Health in Environmental Science and Risk Management.
